Comprehensive Sports Therapy for Injury Prevention and Lasting Relief

Sports therapy is specifically concerned with the prevention of injury and injury rehabilitation, using a range of physical techniques and therapies to return the patient back to optimum levels of function and fitness, regardless of age and ability. Although the name “sports therapy” suggests that that treatment is beneficial only for sportspeople, it can provide help for anyone who is struggling with aches, pain or injury.

By focusing on the individual lifestyle of the patient, including their profession, hobbies, diet and fitness/exercise levels, we can find and diagnose the exact cause of the pain to treat it at it’s source.

Who can benefit from sports therapy?

One of the questions that we get asked most often is who exactly is suitable to benefit from sports therapy, and just who actually need the help of a sports therapist? The answer is really short, anyone can benefit from sports therapy if they are experiencing pain.

If participate in sports or exercise regularly, your body can start to become more susceptible to injuries and strains. Some of the most common injuries that our sports therapy team are able to treat include;

  • Back injuries – Back pain can be attributed to a number of causes, from a bad night’s sleep or posture to an exercise related injury (like a muscle or ligament strain).
  • Ankle or feet injuries – The ankles and feet are parts of the body that are used on a daily basis, and for those who exercise frequently can be a problem area, especially if that exercise involves a lot of running or jumping.
  • Knee injuries – The knees are an area that can cause many issues for people, and are a common complaint point for sportspeople. This pain can include ligament or cartilage damage, meniscal tears and even arthritis, so it’s important to find the cause in addition to treating the pain.
  • Wrist or elbow injuries – Depending on the sport or exercise you perform, repeated arm movements can put a strain on the wrist and elbows. If left untreated, they can become recurring problems that affect quality of life.
  • Shoulder injuries – The shoulder is a complex part of the body and as such, is one of the most commonly seen when it comes to sporting injuries. One of the most commonly known areas to be affected is the rotator cuff.

Whatever your age or activity, our Sports Therapists can enable you to return to pain free activity, whether that be walking the dog, gardening, housework or exercising, running a marathon or playing football.

What will happen at a sports therapy appointment?

Generally, a sports therapy appointment is split into 5 different areas. These are the consultation, assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and prehabilitation phases.

During the consultation, our sports therapists will gather information on your injury as well as your lifestyle and if you have had any previous injuries in the area. With this information, the sports therapist can assess your situation better. This leads directly into the assessment where we can figure out the nature of the injury that has occurred as well as the best options to treat your injury specifically.

Once the diagnosis is complete, a treatment plan will be discussed and agreed. This will focus primarily on the musculoskeletal system to restore, maintain and maximise movement to relieve pain and increase quality of life.
