EMSELLA – A breakthrough treatment for urinary incontinence
Urinary incontinence – the medical terminology for the loss of control of the bladder – is a problem that is often embarrassing and is thought to affect millions of people around the world. It can range from just occasional leaking when doing something like coughing or sneezing all the way through to having an uncontrollable urge to urinate that comes on so suddenly that you are unable to make it to the bathroom.

What are the symptoms of urinary incontinence?

Whilst the most common form of urinary incontinence is the occasional minor leak, it does vary and can be large and frequent. The five main types of urinary incontinence are;

  • Stress incontinence – This is where urine leaks when pressure is exerted on the bladder from something such as coughing or sneezing.
  • Urge incontinence – This is where there is a sudden and intense urge to urinate that is generally followed by an involuntary leakage or loss of urine. The biggest issue with urge incontinence is the frequency that you may need to urinate, including through the night.
  • Overflow incontinence – This is a frequent or in some cases constant leak of urine due to the bladder not fully emptying itself when urinating.
  • Functional incontinence – This is related to a physical or mental issue that stops you from being able to make it to the toilet when needing to urinate. As an example, someone with arthritis may be unable to unbutton their pants quickly enough to use the toilet before leaking.
  • Mixed incontinence – This is related to experiencing more than one kind of urinary incontinence at the same time, but most often refers to a combination of stress and urge incontinence.

What causes urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence can be caused by a number of things, but the main risk factors associated with it are;

  • Weakened bladder muscles as a result of a condition or as a result of aging
  • Damage being caused to the pelvic floor muscles during childbirth
  • Having an enlarged prostate
  • Suffering from prostate or bladder cancer which puts unwanted pressure on the bladder
  • Suffering from a neurological condition such as Alzheimer’s or dementia
  • Suffering from a physical condition that prevents movement
  • Pregnancy
  • Weight
  • Diabetes
  • Menopause
  • Infections such as a UTI

Some of these conditions can be treated easily and are only responsible for temporary, but others are a bit more serious and cause persistent.

How can EMSELLA help to treat urinary incontinence?

The EMSELLA machine is a revolutionary treatment for urinary incontinence thanks to the way in which it can help to treat the problems that cause incontinence, whilst providing huge benefits with the fact that it is non-surgical, non-invasive and doesn’t require the need to even undress.

The EMSELLA device is a specialized chair that uses HIFEM (high intensity focused electromagnetic) waves to trigger contractions within the pelvic floor. These contractions are known as “supramaximal” contractions which means that they are much stronger than what is usually considered to be maximal. By triggering these contractions within the pelvic floor during a 30 minute treatment, it’s possible to achieve the same results as performing over 10,000 kegels.

Because the EMSELLA chair is designed for the sole purpose of targeting weakened muscles within the pelvic floor, the waves penetrate through the body and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. This stimulation is proven to improve bladder control and reduce the severity of urinary incontinence in approximately 95% of the patients who have suffered from bladder leakage.

EMSELLA for incontinence
Why should you choose EMSELLA as a treatment method for incontinence?

The biggest and most obvious reason why people opt for EMSELLA is simply the success rate, the fact that around 95% of patients who have undergone treatment have seen an improvement. It reduces the likelihood of urination from stress incontinence being put onto the bladder (and it provides a boost in not needing to plan an outing based on the availability and location of toilet facilities).

Some other benefits associated with EMSELLA are;

  • There is now downtime or recovery time associated with the treatment, meaning that a patient can get back to their normal day to day life immediately after treatment
  • There is no need to remove any clothing during treatment or even to wear any specific clothing whilst using the chair
  • No need for invasive surgery to assist with the symptoms of incontinence
  • Whilst it isn’t part of the treatment, the EMSELLA machine can also provide relief for lower back pain
  • Some patients have even reported improved sexual pleasure after undergoing treatment

It’s also important to remember that men can experience urinary incontinence as well as women, especially after undergoing prostate procedures. Whilst the EMSELLA treatment for men is currently in its early stages, it is starting to become a viable possibility to treat incontinence in men.
